# Central Valley Habitat for Humanity

> A nonprofit affordable housing organization building and repairing homes with working families in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia — "We build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter."

Central Valley Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. It was organized in 1988 when a group of volunteers at the Bridgewater Interchurch Food Pantry became concerned about the deplorable housing conditions they saw in the community, and dedicated its first house in Grottoes in 1989. Habitat does not build homes for people, but with them as equal partners: Habitat homeowners build alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The affiliate has served 219+ families over 37 years with 500+ volunteers, works with three Habitat Campus Chapters at local schools and twenty-five Covenant Churches, operates the Harrisonburg Habitat ReStore (opened January 2022), and is developing the Suter Street neighborhood, where it is building 11 of the 21 homes in partnership with private developer PDY LLC.

## Services
- Home Ownership Program: Affordable homeownership for qualifying households in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, built through sweat equity and financed by an affordable 30-year mortgage.
- Critical Home Repair Program: Health, safety, and accessibility repairs — roofs, windows and doors, HVAC, handrails, grab bars, ramps — for income-qualified homeowners, with project costs capped at $5,000.
- Suter Street Housing Development: A neighborhood-scale development in north Harrisonburg where Habitat builds 11 homes alongside 10 built by a private developer.
- GiveSolar: A partnership with GiveSolar and its Solar Seed Fund to put solar panels on Habitat homes, with homeowner contributions reinvested to fund future solar installations.
- Habitat ReStore: A home improvement discount outlet in Harrisonburg selling donated new and used furniture, housewares, appliances, and building materials; proceeds fund Habitat's housing work.
- Volunteer Program: Construction site, ReStore, committee, and event volunteering for individuals and groups age 16 and up, organized through the POINT app.
