Our 5th Annual Golf Tournament
Community, partnership, and purpose were on full display at our 5th Annual Golf Tournament, hosted at the beautiful Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg, Virginia. What began as an early morning tee-off at 7:30 a.m. quickly became a powerful reminder of why Central Valley Habitat for Humanity exists—to build homes, create hope, and support the families who live in an "in-between" reality: earning enough to survive, but not enough to thrive.
“The energy is off the charts,” said Larry Swetman, our Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator. “We got here real early… but everybody had a lot of energy. The coffee probably helped, to be honest!” The tournament brought warmth and enthusiasm to a crisp morning, as teams gathered not just for a round of golf, but to rally around a shared mission.
While many know us for constructing homes, Habitat’s mission runs deeper. “We’re bringing together sponsors, our trade partners, our families, our supporters—anybody we can find to celebrate the mission of Habitat for Humanity,” Larry shared. Beyond new builds, our work includes critical home repairs and operating the ReStore, all efforts designed to provide safe, stable housing and a path toward economic security in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
The tournament was a tremendous success. By mid-morning, we had already raised over $50,000—funds that directly support building and repair projects for families in need. “This tournament is not only about raising money,” Larry emphasized, “but about spending time and energy getting to know and supporting our trade partners and our sponsors.” One of the most powerful moments of the day came when a partner family took the stage to share their story—how they found Habitat, how it changed their lives, and how they’re now giving back. “Having her here reminded not only us—but our partners, our volunteers, and the wider world—of why we’re doing this.”
Volunteers are the heartbeat of Central Valley Habitat. “Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t build houses. We wouldn’t do critical home repairs. We wouldn’t raise funds,” Larry said. From checking in players to serving food, helping with logistics, and cheering on participants, our volunteers brought joy, hospitality, and an undeniable sense of unity to the entire event. Their ongoing commitment is what makes days like this possible—and our mission sustainable.
That mission is clear: to break the cycle of poverty and build lasting foundations for families who deserve the opportunity to thrive. “If you want to be involved,” Larry encouraged, “all you’ve got to do is reach out, because there’s a spot for you.” Whether you're a skilled trade partner, a generous sponsor, or someone looking to give back to your community, there’s always room to make an impact.
Together, we are building more than homes—we are building hope, legacy, and a stronger community. One swing at a time.
