Critical Home Repair Program

What Is the Critical
Home Repair Program? 

The Critical Home Repair Program helps low-income homeowners address health, safety, and accessibility needs in their homes within the city of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. From leaky roofs to wheelchair ramps, this program ensures families can remain in their homes with dignity. 

By preserving homes, we strengthen neighborhoods — making Harrisonburg homes healthier, safer, and more connected for everyone.

How Does It Work?

  1. Application: Submit an application with required financial documents or print and mail to our office. 

  2. Assessment: Our team will visit to evaluate repair needs and feasibility.  

  3. Partnership Agreement: Approved homeowners will sign an agreement for work to be performed. Costs should not exceed $5,000.00. You may be expected to contribute up to 20%of the total cost which is based on your income.

  4. Repairs Begin: Habitat will coordinate with habitat employees and skilled contractors. Repairs will be inspected and finalized to ensure safety and satisfaction.

  5. Final Agreement: Signed by Homeowner upon completion.

Do I Qualify?

To be eligible, applicants must: 

  • Own and occupy the home as a primary residence 

  • Live in the City of Harrisonburg or Rockingham County

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident 

  • Property is not located in a floodplain 

Repairs must fall $5,000 and less in estimated cost.

Windows & Door Replacements

Roof Replacements

Note: Cosmetic upgrades or remodels are not covered.
